Midland Fastest Growing Larger City in West Texas

Midland’s population growth is outpacing peer communities in West Texas.

Last week, the U.S. Census Bureau Vintage 2025 population estimates showed the City of Midland’s population is now estimated at 147,615, representing:

  • a 2.7% increase over 2024

  • an 11.0% increase since 2020

 Both growth rates are the highest among major West Texas cities, reflecting the community’s continued economic momentum and regional draw.

The Census estimates showed Midland outpacing peer communities in year-over-year growth:

  • Midland: 2.7%

  • Odessa: 2.0%

  • Abilene: 1.1%

  • Lubbock: 1.0%

  • Amarillo: 0.7%

  • San Angelo: 0.3%

 Since 2020, Midland’s 11.0% growth rate also leads the region:

  • Midland: 11.0%

  • Odessa: 7.2%

  • Lubbock: 6.1%

  • Abilene: 5.2%

  • Amarillo: 2.3%

  • San Angelo: 0.7%

This sustained growth reflects the city’s role as a major economic engine for West Texas and the nation, driven by energy, aviation, healthcare, education, technology, and emerging industries.
